Activations:

There were 5 activations so far this month consisting of three medivacs and two tows.

Operations:

At the last northern zone meeting it was decided that all squadrons would participate and fly the flag in a promotion of Volunteer Marine Rescue at the Bowen Offshore Superboat Races over the weekend of July 22 to 24.

bowen race 16.jpgThe weekend arrived with postcard weather and local VMR Squadrons were involved in supplying safety boats and marshals.   VMR Burdekin’s 9.8 m Kevlacat participated in the street parade.

A few of VMR Whitsunday’s crew attended and hitched a ride on other VMR squadrons’ boats to watch the races.

Training:

Four members have just completed a navigation course and three members are part way through a marine radio course with me, one of whom is offering to join the radio room operators.

General:

VMR Whitsunday members were invited to the Airlie Beach RSL Centenary Ball to celebrate 100 years of the Returned & Services League.

RSL Ball

VMRW members who attended were Margo Merritt (RSL Airlie Beach Airlie Beach / Whitsunday RSL Sub Branch secretary), Fin and Denise Forbes, Geoff and Celia Smith, Gay Bowden, John Caldwell and Ray Lewis and a very enjoyable night was had by all.

The last Sunday music day was very successful but we will have good and bad days and a decision to continue with the event is on the agenda for the next management committee meeting.

Tom Manning is currently on his way to Noosa Cat with a load of equipment and, with our marine surveyor, will check out the progress of the new vessel.

Hopefully Tom will have some good news on the completion of the vessel.

IS YOUR MEMBERSHIP OVERDUE??

Annual membership renewals were due on July 1st and if you have not renewed, you will not be entitled to any membership benefits such as a free tow from August 1st (this coming Monday).

This could be an expensive mistake – non-members (including expired members) are charged $310 per hour for activation assistance and the average cost is about $800 for a standard tow.  Our non-member charges commence when VMR1 leaves its pen – until it returns to pen after refueling.

If you wish to check on your membership status, please email info@vmrwhitsundays.com.au

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING REMINDER

The VMR Whitsunday AGM will be held this coming Monday, 1st August, at the VMR Base building adjacent to the boat ramp car park.

Doors open with a free barbecue (a saving of $3!! 😀 ) from 6.30 pm, followed by the AGM at 7.30 pm.

Don’t forget that any outstanding membership fees and proxies must be lodged with Roger Wodson by 7.00pm, if you wish to vote or participate in elections.

Last year’s AGM was rather long but has established a firm foundation for the future. This year there are only 4 items of general business, so we do not anticipate a long meeting. We have sufficient nominations for all Management Committee positions, so nominations are now closed. However we still have vacancies for VMR representatives in the Whitsunday Marine Club Committee and nominations will be taken from the floor.

See you there!

VMR MUSIC SUNDAY

band members.jpgThanks to Jenni Wasson, the last VMR music session was a huge success with increased attendance on a perfect winter day.

A number of new performers were appreciated by the large crowd.

Remember – there is no charge for entry and the drinks are among the lowest in town.  Parking adjacent to the building is free

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL VMR – join in the barby and you could get lucky in the raffle!

NEXT MUSIC SUNDAY IS SUNDAY AUGUST 7th – kicking off at 2.00 pm, through to sunset at 6.00pm

Collection Tins

Collection TinVMR Whitsunday would like to thank the many organisations for their continued support by placing our collection tin on their shop counter.

SPECIAL THANKS TO DINGO BEACH HOTEL

dingo beach hotel.pngThe locals at Dingo Beach and Hydeaway Bay recognize the importance of VMR Whitsunday – they are actually closer to Bowen than Airlie Beach. We have a large number of members in the area and we are grateful for Dingo Beach Hotel helping out – the latest collection tin held $246!!

This month we also collected the tin from the CTC Tobacconist (Whitsunday Shopping Centre).

The money collected in these tins makes a significant contribution to the operation of our rescue vessel VMR1 and our radio base. Many thanks also to the Whitsunday community who help to fill these tins.

And let’s not forget these organisations that help with sausages, bread rolls and prizes for the VMR Music Days.

Notices to mariners

Only one Notice to Mariners added in July for the local area; this one is about prescribed burns on Whitsunday and Lindeman Islands, basically just warning that visibility may be reduced due to smoke.

Details are available at the Qld Govt Transport website
